Two All-Stars vs. the King
It started as a bar argument: which two players would you need to out-stat LeBron James by yourself? Then HoopsHype turned it into a game, and the answer turned out to be more interesting than anyone expected. We built our own version — Beat LeBron with a daily challenge — and dug into the numbers that make it work.
The mountain you have to climb
Start with the résumé. LeBron James has been selected to 22 All-Star Games — an all-time record and still growing in his 23rd season. He has made 21 All-NBA teams (13 of them First Team), won 4 MVPs, 4 Finals MVPs and 4 championships, and taken home 70 Player of the Week awards. Nobody else in league history has more than 6 MVPs or more than 19 All-Star nods (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, on both counts).
The counting stats are just as absurd: more than 43,000 regular-season points (first all-time by a mile), 12,000+ rebounds, 12,000+ assists — the only player ever in the top five of all three. Add 61,000+ minutes, 1,600+ games, and another 8,500 points in the playoffs, also a record.
That is the puzzle. One player's career, two players to match it.
Some categories are nearly impossible
Take All-NBA First Team selections. LeBron has 13. The only duos that clear him are the very peaks of the sport: think Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (10) plus just a handful of partners. Regular-season games (1,600+)? You need two iron men — Robert Parish and Kareem combined is one of the only answers in history. Player of the Week (70) is arguably the cruellest: LeBron has more weekly awards than most franchises have given out.
Every board in the game is machine-verified to have exactly one winning duo out of the 15 possible pairs — that constraint is what makes it a puzzle instead of a Google search.
The example that started it all
All-Star selections: LeBron sits at 22. Michael Jordan (14) + Russell Westbrook (9) = 23 — that duo beats him, barely. Swap Westbrook for Blake Griffin (6) and you stall at 20. The margin between the right answer and the trap is often a single season's worth of selections, which is exactly the kind of gap fans argue about for hours.
